Centrally located 153.8 rail miles west of Omaha and 137 rail miles east of North Platte in the fertile Platte River Valley, the city of Grand Island was plotted by the Union Pacific Railroad in 1866, and derived it's name from a landmark, 40-mile-long island on the multi-channel Platte River. The early success as a hub of railroad activity secured the city and continued early growth and development. A turn of the Century showplace, the Kirschke House was built in 1902 by the prominent contractor, Otto Kirschke, as his family home.
