It’s hard to avoid thoughts of Western movies in one of Kansas' most famous towns, Dodge City, the cowboy capital of the world where exciting days of cattle drives and gunslingers of old took place and is a landmark in its own right. Don’t miss the Gunfighters Wax Museum, Fort Dodge, Dodge City Raceway Park and the Santa Fe Trail Tracks. One can still see the ruts made by covered wagons on the Trail. Visit Boot Hill Museum located on the original site of Boot Hill Cemetery and where a reconstruction of Dodge City Front Street, the business district of Old Dodge City is located. These historic buildings include an 1879 cattleman's home, the original jail from Fort Dodge, a one-room school, and a church with daily summer entertainment including living history presentations, stagecoach rides through downtown, gunfight re-enactments and chuck wagon dinners available year round for groups and of course the famous Wild West Show. Other notably attractions are the Dodge City Trolley and the Kansas Heritage Center. A few pretty areas where you can enjoy good bed and breakfasts in Kansas West are Ashland, Pratt and Hutchinson. One of the most famous towns of the early West is beautiful Abilene, the name was taken from the Bible and was also the very first cattle boomtown. Once a small log cabin hamlet and stagecoach stop in the mid 1800s, as it grew so did the gunslingers and for a while the gun was the only law. Known as the toughest, roughest, wildest town until the legendary, Wild Bill Hickok, a ‘fast draw’ two-gun expert brought peace and order by showing the rowdy cowboys he really meant business by shooting anyone who dared challenge him. Today it is a serene, pretty little town with replicas of old, enter the little 130 year-old log church that was the second church built in the County and a century old pump organ that still proudly sits in front of the pew. Apart from the log cabins and school, nearly all the buildings have been reconstructed and moved to the original town site where once stood an off limits bawdy district. See for yourself ‘Hickok’s Cabin’ as it was, dating back to 1868 and the little schoolhouse cabin built a few years later. With comfortable and affordable bed and breakfast in Kansas West you’ll find a relaxed atmosphere with convenient locations for exploring the exciting surrounding historical sights.
