A five-college area rich in history is the beautiful town of Amherst offering a diverse palette of activities that can be enjoyed by all ages. The surrounding region bubbles with culture, art, live music, and the performing arts. You can either see a show at the Fine Art Center, have a night out at the Valley Light Opera or just simply appreciate history in the Emily Dickinson’s Homestead and Museum dedicated to the 19th – early twentieth century celebrated poet. For natural beauty, hike through the 3,000-acre Mount Holyoke Range State Park and whilst photography is the order of the day, Nordic skiing and snow-mobiling are enjoyed in the winter months. You’ll find a wonderful golf course set on some of the most beautiful land where the course features ponds, wetlands and a wide variety of trees, birds, and wildlife. Walk along the paths that join up the scenic Mill River Conservation Trails and the 42-mile Robert Frost Trail System.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places is the 1750 Amherst History Museum where visitors are taken on a captivating journey to the town's colonial past. For a more leisurely activity, why not wander around and admire the beauty of the old church designed by the English architect Henry Dudley, this grey stone structure is an excellent example of English Gothic architecture. Nearby are Belchertown, Palmer, Barre and Ware. With so many wonderful places to visit, stylish and cosy bed and breakfast in Massachusetts Pioneer Valley is waiting to welcome you with open arms!

Wedged against a backdrop of heavily wooded hills with the Pioneer Valley beyond, is Greenfield. Excellent amenities abound if you are looking for fun, sport and action. The pretty town itself offers the visitor free skiing at the Greenfield Country Club, Mohawk Meadows Country Club, Poets Seat Tower Park and Old Town Farm Land and for cross-country-skiing, visit Northfield Mountain's professionally groomed trails. If angling is your idea of relaxation, then you’ll find many pristine brooks, streams and rivers that have long been a firm favorite for small trout fishing particularly in the Barton Brook, Falls and Green Rivers. An interesting sight is the Poets Seat Tower Park where a historic stone edifice was erected in 1912 at the sight where Greenfield's most famous poet, Frederick Goddard Tuckerman was inspired. The Park, a broad ancient 500-foot high volcanic ridge, has several miles of scenic nature trails for winter cross-country skiing or snow-shoeing and the same trails make for superb hiking and biking, with many excellent vistas along the way complimented by unique flora and fauna. Deer, coyote, bobcat and fox are the regular residents but the black bear and moose have been glimpsed. For a real energy and buzz that seems to rub off onto everyone that visits, why not climb the Tower for some of the most stunning views of the majestic towering peaks in the distance! Bird watchers can spot bald eagles nesting in the nearby Cove and other visitors can see where dinosaur tracks have recently been discovered. Other nearby localities providing good sightseeing bases are: Colrain, Buckland and Conway.

For the largest amusement park, why not take the whole family to the brand new Six Flags Amusement Park situated across the river in Agawam and the Riverside Magic Kingdom Water Park. You can also visit the Robinson State Park this 811-acre site offers bike trails, fishing, swimming, picnic areas, hiking and cross-country skiing. Nearby is Springfield, where basketball was created and the first Indian motorcycle was produced, is also home to the Springfield Symphony Orchestra and the newly opened Dr. Seuss National Memorial and Sculpture Gardens, there you can see the life size statues of native Dr. Szeuss and his favorite characters including Horton, the Grinch and the Lorax. There are 4 museums in total, housing fierce Samurai armour and weaponry, the acclaimed collection of oriental bronze, jade and porcelain, don’t miss the Dinosaur Hall with its towering tyrannosaurus rex and the interesting Astronomy Hall complete with a planetarium. Other pretty localities in the area are: West Springfield, Southampton and Easthampton.

South Hadley is a small and friendly college town with a diverse offering of recreational activities, located along the banks of the Connecticut River it also has a Dinosaur Museum providing a unique experience, you’ll also find excellent shopping in the delightful Barn Shops and there are also bars, night clubs with live entertainers providing an exciting night life. With museums and antique stores that offer glimpses into Northampton's rich history and its funky college atmosphere complete with fine arts, theater and first-class dining, Williamsburg is truly a destination worthy of a visit as are Hadley and Haydenville. You'll also be able to visit eclectic shops and dine at restaurants so sophisticated they've been featured in the New York Times. For the outdoor enthusiast there is a good selection of golf courses, cross-country skiing to enjoy and panoramic vistas with excellent fishing in the nearby rivers and streams.

A visit to the butterfly garden at South Deerfield provides a wonderful experience for the visitor. The conservatory covers 8,000 square feet and houses nearly 4,000 native and exotic butterflies! The one-acre outdoor garden area also has many types of native flowers and trees allowing you to admire the butterflies in their a natural habitat. Other nearby and interesting places are: Rowe and Whately.
