You’ll find wildflowers and animal life, which can most readily be seen near the towns of Ainsworth or Valentine, at Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge. A magnificent sight is the nearby 70-foot-high Smith Falls. For the nature lover, the Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway, dubbed one of the most scenic routes in the United States. With the splendour of its topography it is uniquely captivating. Pheasant, grouse, quail, and deer thrive amongst the subtle beauty of the area. Nearby Seneca is the rare feature of the nation’s largest hand-planted forest in the Nebraska National Forest with nearly 20,000 acres of ponderosa pines, eastern red cedars and jack pines. It is the largest most impressive hand-planted forest in the country.
