Surrounded by the Sangre De Cristo Mountains, it offers many historic adobe buildings that reveals the town’s Spanish, Indian and American heritage, a small cosmopolitan city with fabulous restaurants, opera, art galleries exhibiting some of the best artists in the country, handicrafts plus scenic byways and ancient ruins. Main sights to see are San Miguel Mission, the Palace of the Governors, the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi and Loretto Chapel with its famed ‘Miracle Stairway’. Try out the popular Astronomy Adventures with guided Night Sky Tours, it truly provides the thrill of discovery and wonder for visitors of all ages, the dark clear skies allow you to see a greater density of stars, creating an extraordinary visual impact. Experiencing the natural wonders of the night sky with your own eyes will help bring your textbook knowledge of the universe to vivid life. Other attractions including the site where the world's first atomic bomb was developed in the secret city of Los Alamos. While in Los Alamos, take a short hike into the wilderness that surrounds the city and its satellite community, White Rock. The highest peak in the Sangre de Cristo Range is nearby; hikers head for the high country north of town that is part of Carson National Forest. It includes Wheeler Peak at 13,161 ft the tallest in the State. Day hikers have a choice of several treks, ranging from gentle to tough. Both the Bull of the Woods Pasture Trail and the Williams Lake Trail begin from the base of the ski lifts or from Kachina Peak lift in the ski resort. After a hike, you might consider a leisurely soak in one of the areas hot springs. Mountain bike jaunts are also available the towns of either Arroyo Hondo or Arroyo Secco, you may even spot the state bird the famous roadrunner during a ride to the Rio Grande Gorge which is a portion of the river that has carved a deep canyon through the desert.
