Opened in 1842, Howe Caverns were one of New York's first and most visited natural attractions and still remain a premier venue today that offers adventure designed to enlighten, entertain, and educate and where visitors can take a journey 156 feet below ground, these spectacular majestic caverns of stalactites and stalagmites were a natural prehistoric world formed millions of years ago and they have an elevator entrance, brick walkways, strategic lighting and include a boat ride on the underground Lake of Venus. For an unusual cruise, try out the classic wooden boats. In an area rich with railroad history, you can also ride through Charlotte Valley on a Railroad carriage, it certainly takes visitors back in time with vintage rail cars and locomotives across the scenic wilderness of the Upper Susquehanna River Valley. The Railroad crosses the river twice over two steel-truss bridges, and travels through a variety of landscapes including forests and wetlands. Other activities include the only recreational indoor and outdoor go-kart racing facility that can be found at Northgate Speedway offering nine different style karts and four different track configurations.
Located on the site of the point of origin of the Erie Canal and known worldwide as the home of Revere Copper and Brass is Rome offering a wealth of history and culture. In the center of town is located Fort Stanwix National Monument known as the “fort that never surrendered” and was faithfully reconstructed to its 1777 appearance! The American Flag first flew at the fort during the American Revolution. It is the birthplace of Francis Bellamy, the famous author of the Pledge of Allegiance. This remarkable little town has a wonderful family fun center with go-carts, bumper boats, a nice arcade, miniature golf, picnicking and a 300-ft water slide for all age groups. Then for the little children there is a petting zoo with pony rides, a play area of giant soft toys, exotic and native animals, picnicking and a hands-on animal presentation.
Sylvan Lake Amusement Park is located on the shore of beautiful Oneida Lake, where you can enjoy exhilarating rides and family fun. Nearby is the Glimmerglass State Park overlooking the beautiful Otsego Lake, and where the author James Fenimore Cooper's "Leatherstocking Tales" was inspired. The rolling, partially wooded landscape is host to a wide variety of wildlife with a scenic trail through the forest bringing you to a spectacular view of the lake. The beaver pond and woodland trails are very picturesque with a variety of interesting flora and fauna. There is also plenty of well-groomed golf courses, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, biking, hiking, and antiquing.
Located in the Mohawk River and the Erie Canal, is Little Falls providing skiing on the Shu-Maker Mountain with a 750-foot vertical drop and 22 trails for the intermediate and expert alike. Also the Mohawk Herkimer Diamond Mines where you can experience mining and dig for diamonds then keep all the diamonds you find, you can also dig for beautifully doubly-terminated quartz crystals already faceted by nature, these sparkling crystals were formed over half a billion years ago. You'll find a gem and mineral shop, restaurant, museum and picnicking, not forgetting fishing, tubing, horseback riding and … oh yes…you can meet "Randy" the Museum's premier showcase, a rare dinosaur skull exhibited in the fossil cabinet. Cazenovia offers special family activities and is the center of activity during the maple sugaring, fall harvest, and winter seasons. In spring you can learn all about maple syrup production.
