The Shinnecock Canal in the heart of downtown Southampton provides a connecting waterway for vessels travelling from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great and Little Peconic Bays. Dering Harbor located within Shelter Island, offers a scenic shoreline drive and is well worth a visit. For those who are interested in fauna and flora, then head for the Mashomack Nature Preserve with nearly 2,100 acres and is home to many species of plants and animals including several rarities.

Visit the picturesque and bustling seaport of Port Jefferson, in the heart of Long Island's prestigious north shore, it's a historic ship-building village nestled at the far end of the harbor where restaurants and shops of period buildings in tree-lined streets where tourists blend to form the commercial scene and breath the sweet salt air while enjoying a wide range of pleasure boats. For a panoramic view, take the daily cruise from Port Jefferson Harbor along the scenic North Shore and see some beautiful views of the harbor. There's plenty of history in the village, mostly tied to the shipbuilding years and you'll find a treasure trove of Victoriana here too, though originally it was a waterside home for the Setauket Indians.

Fishing party boats, ecological tours, paddle wheelers, electric boats and tall ships are all available to the interested seafaring visitors. The town of Montauk, situated at the eastern end, offer many day and half-day cruises to suit every need and budget and there are many delightful state parks within the area offering an extensive variety of facilities with varying landscapes, but hiking, cycling, picnicking, rowing, fishing are also widely available throughout the impressive 21,000 acres of land. The wetlands, grasslands and forests are also home to a variety of frogs, toads, salamanders, snakes and turtles. The more popular creatures being the turtles, which vary in everything from size, to shell design and visibility and are quite often seen basking in the brilliant sunshine. Autumn on the island is a time when migratory fish are plentiful on the shores and where waterfowl, seals and whales take refuge during winter. Summer brings enjoyment of beaches and hiking with beautiful vistas and breathtaking scenic displays whilst spring provides the abundant harvest of the many wineries.
