If you are interested in bridges, then the Packsaddle Covered Bridge over Brush Creek is monumentally the most striking and provides some stunning picturesque scenes of the surrounding countryside. To quench your thirst after a long days hiking, why not check out the Glades Pike Winery for a tour and wine tasting? It specializes in award-winning wines made from locally grown grapes and visitors are shown the wine making process. Close by is Keystone State Park with over 1,182 acres including a magnificent sparkling 78-acre lake. The waters are a welcome retreat for fishermen, swimmers and boaters alike, and you'll also find numerous hiking and cross-country skiing trails throughout the park to keep you entertained. Hunting is also permitted during the season in certain areas of the park. In nearby Donega you'll find horse riding stables open all year round, they include a forty horse stall barn with outdoor and indoor riding arena and a superb variety of scenic horseback riding trails. Here you can take a guided trail ride through some of the most beautiful areas of the Laurel Highlands.
Historic Mercersburg is the birthplace of President James Buchanan, the only President of the United States born in Pennsylvania. Take a stroll along the two-mile Laurel Path that encircles the beautiful crystal clear Eagles Mere Lake enveloped by a forest of Pine, mountain laurel and giant rhododendron bushes. Summer swimming, sailboats and canoeing are taken over in winter as the scene is replaced by the famous Toboggan Slide and Ice Skating. Don't miss Rickett's Glen State Park and its wonderful Waterfall Trail, the journey is almost Pennsylvania encapsulated. A total of 22 waterfalls can be found within the park and that includes the beauty of a 4-mile natural gorge trail with cascading free flowing waterfalls, a scene worthy of a picture book!
Nearby in Saxton on Warriors Path State Park, you'll find endless opportunities for boating, hiking, fishing and nearly six miles of cross-country ski trails taking you through woodlands and meadows of a 349-acre park and the Juniata River provides excellent fishing opportunities for carp, smallmouth bass, muskellunge, walleye, rock bass, catfish and eel. Other interesting towns worthy of a visit are: Scottsdale, Jennerstown, Brush Valley, Davidsville, Homer City and Martinsburg.
For Allegheny touring and trails you may opt to visit Confluence and explore the 70-mile stone trail a glorious sightseeing experience that runs through Ohiopyle State Park. Motorized vehicles are prohibited and you can enjoy hiking, biking and cross-country skiing. Picturesque Champion offers Indian Creek Valley Trail, another stone surface hiking and biking trail along Indian Creek. If you like Go Karting, then join in the fun at the Statler's Fun Center in Greensburg, the track is the largest and most thrilling at 1528 feet long, it has a double over-and-under bridge for you to steer round and you'll really feel the force as you speed round the turns!
