Hiking boots and mountain bikes are exchanged for skis as the white slopes are ranked among the most challenging in the world. Stowe has gained a well-deserved reputation for expert slopes and many of the pistes will suit all levels of skier no wonder it’s ranked as number one ski resort. Split roughly between the two mountains, Mt. Mansfield and Spruce Peak, you’ll find the latter almost entirely devoted to the needs of intermediate and first time skier, a wonderful town full of character and history with many open fire places in the winter months and plenty of large wooden beamed, music-filled bars and restaurants to choose from, here you can experience breathtaking scenery with views of mountain ranges and pristine forests. In winter its mountains and valleys are blanketed with the purest snow, which yields to a spring and summer’s canopy of gorgeous green and then the Fall’s picture-post-card foliage. Off the slopes there is still plenty to do like shopping, snowshoe tours, skating, snowmobiling or visits to the local attractions in Lydonville and Craftsbury. A thriving cultural town, with a great music scene, is beautiful Burlington set on Lake Champlain and is blessed with a world-class collection of fine architecture. At the boathouse situated on the waterfront, you can rent a kayak and paddle off into the sunset, take a cruise around and marvel at the scenic vistas or hike along the paved waterfront walkways, dotted with an abundance of little cafés as you stroll along the lakeshore going from one end of the city to South Burlington. Other interesting places are Essex Junction, nestled between the Green Mountains and Lake Champlain, Saint Johnsbury or Alburg offering history, geology and boasting an 18 hole public golf course right on the shores of Lake Champlain is well known for its open fairways and small greens. Here you’ll find interesting souvenirs, gifts, books, maple products, minerals and fossils. Hike, drive, bike or horse ride through peaceful forests and discover tiny, but succulent cuisine from off-the-beaten-track restaurants.
