Equally enjoyable alternatives for non-skiers are sleigh rides, ice-skating, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. Just off scenic route 9 you’ll find Marlboro, a small sedate town located almost mid-way between Brattleboro and next door, nestled in the Green Mountains is Wilmington, a natural stop for skiers where you’ll find excellent dining and comfortable bed and breakfast accommodation. During the warmer months, Vermont South has many great scenic drives, as is the Hogback Mountain scenic outlook, or the nearby Lake Whitingham with several magnificent state parks all around it.
Whether you like to just settle down for some peaceful relaxation or seek out activities, you’ll find picturesque areas surrounded by beautiful rural mountainous countryside where you can have fun and great places to explore. Lake Whitingham, the largest lake in the State of Vermont, offers hiking and all other popular activities; don’t miss the stunning views from the top of the mountains, it is surly worth the climb.

You can enjoy its many attractions and sights, or simply explore and marvel at nature’s beauty in all its glory. There’s scenic splendour all around this region, visit the historic Bennington Battle Monument then follow the remarkable Molly Start Trail, where every turn in the road reveals a fantastic view. Don’t miss the Bennington Battle Monument that was constructed in 1891. Rich in the arts, history and outdoor recreational opportunities, boasting somewhat simple elegance, coupled with marvellous architecture makes this area a visual delight with museums, attractions, antique shops, art galleries and historic walking tours. Take the Appalachian and Long Trails, literally within walking distance from the town, or enjoy the beautiful vistas, pristine state parks, great restaurants and wonderful bed and breakfast establishments within the green mountains and their lush valleys.
Experience Vermont South for its clean air and crystal clear cool waters, rivers, lakes and streams. The small town of West Wardsboro is a must visit too if only for its unique quilt shop and general store untouched by time! Among many other pursuits, during the winter months you can enjoy horse drawn sleigh rides, snow-mobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, then after a long day go for a well deserved dinner; some truly gourmet restaurants can be found within the state, or you can dine as simply or frugally as you wish.
Maybe you’ll wish to opt for West Halifax or Readsboro, these small localities are little known, but they have a lot to offer.
