Renovated and redecorated by new owners Jake and Monica in 2002, Sinclair House reopened for business in April of that year and has flourished since. The aim has been to provide guests with something different, something unique, and hopefully, a memorable experience they will want to share with their friends.
The innkeepers spent decades living and working around the world, Jake with the State Department and Monica as a Peruvian working with the United Nations (UNICEF). They found each other in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa where they were both assigned in the late 80's. As each was an inveterate collector, they joined together their respective troves of artifacts, furniture, sculpture and handicrafts. Since reopening Sinclair House, they now are able to share these treasures with their guests.
Enter the enclosed front porch and you'll find Moroccan carpets on the floor, a Javanese long bench gracing the right side and rattan sitting chairs on the left. The social room offers South African beaded dolls, Mozambican artwork and sculpture, Peruvian carved gourds and Moroccan brassware, with an Indonesian batik mounted on the wall alongside Peruvian inlaid mirrors. Everywhere you look, something out-of-the ordinary will catch your eye and you are likely to ask, "Now, where in the world did you find that?"

  Area Activities

Gardens/arboretum
Kayaking is America's fastest growing sport. Tilghman Island and its hinterland offer sheltered coves and creeks as well as protected wildlife sanctuaries. Kayak and canoe enthusiasts simply put their boats in the water and paddle out to explore these hidden by-ways where waterfowl abound.
Local rentals of kayaks and canoes are available, as is coaching for beginners.
Other rentals include sailboats, jet boats, fishing and crabbing gear….even pleasure boats!

Biking is perhaps the best way to efficiently get the feel and taste of this unique part of the Eastern Shore. The whole Easton, St. Michaels, Tilghman Island, Oxford region is a magnet for bicyclists who take advantage of the flat terrain, wide shoulders of local highways, and relatively light traffic to get their exercise and see the country at the same time.
Bicycling on Tilghman
Sinclair House is listed as "biker-friendly" in local bicycling newsletters and we offer to place bicycles under cover in a locked area for guests requesting such facilities. Bikes are available for rent locally.

Hiking and Jogging are popular on Tilghman Island. The island is only three square miles and can be covered easily during a morning or afternoon. The communities of Fairbank and Black Walnut Point on the southerly end of the island are worth visiting, as are Dogwood Harbor - with its last remaining fleet of skipjack sailing craft - and Knapps Narrows with its landmark drawbridge.

Cruising on the Chesapeake offers an opportunity to get out on the Bay and catch the fresh breezes. During the season several captains take on visitors for cruises of two hours or more, either under sail or by motor. Visitors can taste a bit of history by boarding the Rebecca T. Ruark, a skipjack dating from the 19th Century, whose two hour sailings come complete with commentary by a 4th generation skipjack captain.

Charter fishing has always been a popular activity on Tilghman Island. The original establishment of Sinclair House as a fishing camp house is testimony to that fact. Several captains offer charter trips including bait and tackle for half-day or full day trips to their favorite fishing spots on the Chesapeake. For a list of these possibilities, send us an e-mail message with address to:

Birding devotees will find the Black Walnut Point birdlife sanctuary worth a look. In mid 2003, Sinclair House guests returned from a bicycle jaunt there to exclaim they spotted a Bald Eagle nesting with two chicks.

Photographing the local scene can be rewarding. Scenes of "watermen" bringing to land the bounty of the Chesapeake --- oysters, crabs, rockfish --- depending on the season, provide a constant source of interest. And the spectacular sunsets framed with fishing craft in the foreground will be wonderful souvenirs of your visit to the Chesapeake region.

Nearby Golf
Golfing enthusiasts will find three golf courses within a 30 minute drive, one of them designed
