Island Falls is a small town (population less than 800) snuggled in the southernmost part of Aroostook County, the most northern county in the state and conveneintly located right off Rte 95.
|
The town has two pristine beautiful lakes, Mattawamkeag and Pleasant, which offer winter and summer activities. There is an historic clothing museum in town THE WEBB MUSEUM as well as the nearby Historical Society and Emerson Store, selling many local crafts. There is also The Briar Patch and Country Creation gift shops. A local diner Above the Falls Cafe and the accclaimed Horn Of Plenty Restaurant, whose owners Nancy and Bill moved to town ten years ago and added this popular attraction to this quiet town, are also here. In the center of town is a small island and rushing water, " the falls", where the original settlers came in 1845. Not far from this location is the SEWALL HOUSE YOGA RETREAT, set in the home where the town founders the Sewalls built their home, which was the town's first Post Office and informal Inn. William Sewall's great granddaughter and her husband continue the traditon of healing (from June 15 to mid October and Christmas) that the area and home offered to people such as Theodore Roosevelt, who was cured from asthma here. There is also a time share Vacation Land Estates and a camping area Birch Point on Pleasant Lake, 5 miles out of town. Northern Maine boasts of wildlife such as moose, loon and bear. Being much less populated than the southern part of the state makes northern Maine ideal for a great vacation getaway. By Donna Davidge amrita@mindspring.com www.sewallhouse.com
