The Upper East side of Manhattan boasts gorgeous prewar apartments and townhouses, and plenty of sleek ladies who lunch. The opening of Central Park in the late 19th century, encouraged the city's most affluent residents to begin building mansions along 5th Avenue.
|
Even the superwealthy had warmed to the idea of living in apartments, as long as they were close to the park. Along the strip known as the Gold Coast, Fifth, Madison and Park Aves. from 60th-80th streets there are many great old mansions, some are now foreign consulates. There are some wonderful old carriage houses along 63rd and 64th streets as well. Madison Ave. from 57th-86th streets is New York's world class, ultraluxe shopping strip. Due to many philanthropic gestures of the moneyed class over the last 100 years, the area has a cluster of art collections, museums and cultural institutions.
