The colonial port of Charleston, proudly maintains the aristocratic traditions established during the plantation golden era is also one of America's most beautifully preserved cities awash with history, often referred to as a "living museum"
|
With block after block of carefully restored historic structures dating from the 18th and 19th century, with graceful old mansions and plantation houses that are peppered amongst a maze of cobblestone streets and many of the sites date back to before the American Revolution, with the Charleston Museum being the oldest in America. Charleston offers an abundance of attractions, from the world’s largest naval and maritime museum, to the famous open-air market and most importantly Fort Sumter where on April 12th 1861, the first shots of the Civil War were fired. The Fort is an island snuggling at the mouth of Charleston Harbor and marks the very site of the first military engagement of the Civil War, one month after Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration. Sitting at the entrance of Charleston harbor, across from Fort Sumter, is Fort Moultrie overlooking the Atlantic with superb views of passing ships and the cities of Charleston and North Charleston.
Visit one of the largest cotton plantations, Boone Hill, for a fascinating glimpse of a very different lifestyle or take a scenic boat ride across to the man-made island of Fort Sumter. Charleston’s old world charm is considered as one of the south’s best preserved cities, also surprisingly cosmopolitan with a historic ethnic mix of French Huguenots, Catholic Acadians and African Americans from the Caribbean who collectively introduced the wrought-iron balconies and brightly colored cottages that give the city much of its charm. Cycle through over 500 acres of wildlife trails and as evening falls, spend time amongst the city’s many excellent restaurants. You can explore on foot, or try a trolley or horse-drawn carriage tour down the cobblestone streets pass the many mansions and churches that are open to visitors, see the beautiful spire of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church which was modelled on the London churches of Sir Christopher Wren. You’ll find ample cosy and stylish bed and breakfast in South Carolina Coast area ranging from all budgets to splendid resorts catering to your every whim.
