Inside, candlelit dinners await you. Large, comfortable rooms offer modern amenities in period decor. Relax. Sip a glass of wine by the fire, or ponder your favorite book in the library while the kids explore the garden or sled on a nearby hill. Every window frames a picture of country tranquility, yet shops, museums, and Middlebury College are a short walk away.
The Main House, the most historic, is a Federal-style mansion with all the hospitable elegance you would expect in a governor's home - marble sinks, crystal doorknobs, push-button light switches and a fascinating collection of nooks and crannies. The Swift Room, once the master bedroom, still displays the old brass internal telephone that Mrs. Swift used in Woodrow Wilson's day.

The adjacent Carriage House, which was fully modernized in 1990, provides spacious rooms with king-size beds, queen sleeper-sofas, and all the comforts of home. Luxuriate in your own private Jacuzzi, or walk down a flight of stairs to bask in the steam room or sauna. The Carriage House conference room and adjoining guest room have a private patio which leads to a walkway that weaves through five acres of spectacular lawns and gardens.

You may prefer the Gate House, a Victorian gem complete with porte-cochere and wraparound porch. The interior is a pastiche of ornate woodwork and stained glass. Spend the evening next to the fire, or enjoy a game of Scrabble in the parlor. All rooms come with luxurious linens, handmade quilts, Internet data ports, and private baths. Antiques grace every corner.

Today the Swift House Inn is a beautifully-appointed gathering place, ideal for family dinners, reunions, holidays, weddings, and executive retreats. A gourmet meal at our restaurant is always memorable. You will be shown to your candlelit table with its fine linen, elegant silver, and sparkling crystal. The delectable menu ranges from Mediterranean flavors to traditional Vermont favorites. Everything is supplied by local growers to ensure absolute freshness. As proud members of the Vermont Fresh Network, the Slow Food Movement, and the Chef's Collaborative, our award-winning culinary team is unrivaled in central Vermont. But it's not just the food, it's the alchemy of intimate ambiance, doting staff, splendid surroundings, and an extensive wine cellar that make The Swift House Inn a magical experience. After dinner, nod next to the hearth, peruse the volumes in our library, or sit on the window-lined veranda watching village lights twinkle like stars in the distance.
